How to use it
- Bring a pan of water to a gentle boil — enough to cover the eggs.
- Choose soft, medium or hard, the egg size, and fridge or room temperature. The timer sets itself.
- Lower the eggs in with a spoon and press Start straight away.
- When the alarm sounds, move the eggs to cold water to stop the cooking.
- For anything else in the kitchen, set any time with the steppers or presets below the egg options.
About these times
The times are the usual published guides for eggs lowered into water that is already boiling: about 6 minutes for a soft-boiled large egg from the fridge (set white, runny yolk), 8 minutes for medium (jammy yolk) and 11 minutes for hard (fully set, not chalky). Smaller eggs need about 30 seconds less, extra-large about 30 seconds more and jumbo about a minute more. An egg at room temperature needs about a minute less.
They are guides, not guarantees. A crowded pan, a weak burner or high altitude (where water boils at a lower temperature) all lengthen the time. Cook one test egg, then adjust by 30 seconds either way and save your own timing.
Food-safety agencies advise cooking eggs until both white and yolk are firm for young children, older adults, pregnant women and anyone with a weakened immune system.
Questions people ask
Do I start timing in cold water or boiling water?
These times are for eggs lowered into water that is already boiling. Starting in cold water works too, but the time then depends on how fast your stove heats the pan, so it is harder to repeat.
Why did my egg crack?
A fridge-cold egg dropped into boiling water can crack from the sudden heat. Lower it gently with a spoon, keep the boil gentle rather than rolling, or let the egg warm up for a few minutes first.
How do I make eggs easier to peel?
Cool them in cold or iced water as soon as they are done and peel from the wide end. Eggs that are a week or two old usually peel more cleanly than very fresh ones.
Can I save my own timing?
Yes. Adjust the time, then choose Save timer. It appears under “Your timers” on the home page and the timer page.
