A steady click for practice. Set the tempo with the slider or tap it in, choose the beats per bar, and add subdivisions when you want to hear the eighths or triplets.

How to use it
- Set the tempo with the slider, the − and + buttons, or by typing a number.
- Or tap the Tap tempo button in time with the music; it averages your last few taps.
- Choose the beats per bar. Beat one gets a higher accented click; turn the accent off for an even pulse.
- Add a subdivision to hear eighth notes, triplets or sixteenths between the beats.
- Press Start (or the space bar). Save tempos you use often and recall them with one tap.
Why the timing is steady
Clicks are not fired by a JavaScript timer, which can run late when the page is busy. Each click is scheduled a fraction of a second ahead on the audio clock — the same sample-accurate clock the sound hardware uses — so the spacing between beats does not wobble.
Bluetooth headphones and speakers add a constant delay of a tenth of a second or more. The click stays steady, but it will sound late against an acoustic instrument; use wired headphones or the device speaker when you need to play exactly with it.
Tempo names
The Italian tempo marking shown next to the number is the conventional range for that speed — for example Adagio around 66–76 BPM, Andante around 76–108, Allegro around 120–156. The ranges are traditional rather than exact, and different sources draw the lines slightly differently.
Questions people ask
What does BPM mean?
Beats per minute. At 60 BPM there is one beat every second; at 120 BPM, two.
How does tap tempo work?
Tap the button (or press T) at least twice in time with the beat. The metronome averages the gaps between your most recent taps and sets the tempo to match.
Why is there no sound on my iPhone?
Web pages are muted by the ring/silent switch on iPhone and iPad. Set it to ring, and raise the volume slider on the page.
Can I change the time signature while it plays?
Yes. Changes to beats, accent and subdivision take effect from the next beat.
